Larsen Bay, Alaska

Population: 115 (Census 2000)
Distance from Kodiak: 64 air miles

Situated in a scenic valley on a narrow fjord, Larsen Bay is a hub of commercial and sport fishing activity on Kodiak Island's west coast. The area is thought to have been inhabited for at least 2,000 years. Hundreds of artifacts have been uncovered in the area. Russian fur traders frequented the Island in the mid-1700s. The bay was named for Peter Larsen, an Unga Island furrier, hunter and guide. In the early 1800s, there was a tannery in Uyak Bay. The present-day Natives are Alutiiq (Russian-Aleuts). Alaska Packers Association built a cannery in the village in 1911. The City was incorporated in 1974.  Area lodges lure anglers from around the world for some of the best fishing in the archipelago.

Larsen Bay Rental Cabin

Attention Kodiak Deer Hunters!

Warm, dry bunkhouse for rent on Uyak Bay in prime hunting area between Spiridon and Zachar Bays. Easy floatplane access from Kodiak City.  It is located about 7 miles NE of the village of Larson Bay.  There is a sheltered cove with a gentle beach at the site, so planes should have no trouble getting right to the site.  (Tell the pilot to stay clear of the buoy right in front of the cabin, it marks a 3000 lb. mushroom anchor that sticks out at low tide!)  The Bunkhouse is insulated and has an oil heater, bunks, a table and counter area.  There are assorted cooking pots and pans and a Coleman lantern.  You will need to bring your own No.1 heater oil, food, dishes, camp stove and fuel, sleeping bags and pads.  A handheld VHF radio is also recommended in case of emergency.  Larson Bay uses channel 69 and someone is usually monitoring that channel.

$70 per person per day.  Maximum of 6 guests.  For more information, please call 907-223-6508 or 907-746-3289.  To make flight reservations, please contact Island Air at 907-487-4596 or 1-800-478-6196.
